I'm trying to get into ice fishing for the first time this year. I know i will need an auger. Should i get a power or hand held? Is a portable fish finder needed? I plan on going mostly for jacks. What kind of rod and lures would be best? Thanks to anyone in advance!

You can't beat spoons for pike, tip-ups and smelt also work great. As for auger's it all depends on how much fishing you plan to do, your budget. Hand augers are okay for early season but once there is 3 feet of ice you get a good workout by the time you drill half a doezen holes and you endup only drilling a few holes and not fishing the lakes as effeictivly.

Well a 6" hand auger is all you really need to start off. They cost about 50 - 60 dollars now. Then you could buy a small rod and reel and some spoons for not too much. Try jigging with a spoon tipped with a minnow on a lake in 5 - 10 feet of water, especially near a weed bed to start off with Jack.
